An Updated Tree Bylaw
The Tree Bylaw for the City of Kingston (Bylaw No. 2007-170) was passed by Council on September 4, 2007, and regulates the removal or injury of trees within the municipality. Anyone wishing to remove a tree must first find out whether a tree permit is required. Generally, the Tree Bylaw does not apply to existing residential properties. However property owners should ensure that the tree they wish to remove is not located within the municipal right-of-way on their property, and that it is not protected as part of a Tree Preservation and Protection Plan that may be part of their subdivision.
Additional information regarding the Tree Bylaw, including requirements for a permit and exemptions to the bylaw, can be found in the Frequently Asked Questions section, guidelines for Tree Preservation and Protection, and for the Completion of an Arborist's Report You can also download a copy of the bylaw, the Tree Bylaw Guidelines and an application for a tree Permit (available at right).
To determine whether the tree you wish to remove is within the municipal right-of-way, please contact the Public Works Department through the customer service centre at 613-546-0000.
