Access Award

Who would you nominate for the International Day
of Persons with Disabilities Access Award?

Personal trainer, Dawn Campbell of allAbilities Fitness, is the recipient of the first-ever International Day of Persons With Disabilities Access Award (see link at right for more details).

The City, in partnership with the Municipal Accessibility Advisory Committee (MAAC), created the International Day of Persons With Disabilities Access Award to recognize a person, group or organization that has made or is making a significant contribution beyond legislated requirements, towards improving access for persons with disabilities in Kingston.

Contributions that improve accessibility could include: designing new or renovated buildings; an employment program; a transportation system; a recreational or leisure program; or anything that contributes significantly to persons with disabilities living independently.

Nominations

The nomination forms will now be reviewed to confirm eligibility and confirmed nominees will be forwarded to the Selection Committee.

Eligibility

Any individual, team, company or organization living and/or working in Kingston or involved in a project which directly benefits the citizens of Kingston can be eligible for this Award. To be eligible, projects must have been developed within the past three years (2008 to 2011).

Selection Committee

The Award's Selection Committee chooses the finalist from amongst the nominations received. The Selection Committee is comprised of: the Chair of the MAAC and one MAAC member from each of the three working groups: Built Environment; Information/Communication/Employment; and Transportation.

All Selection Committee deliberations will remain confidential and decisions are final. The judging of nominated projects will take place in early fall, and the Awards Ceremony will be held in December.

Selection criteria

The Selection Committee will consider the following factors as it evaluates nominees for the International Day for Persons with Disabilities Access Award:

  • How the project has developed effective awareness about disability and accessibility issues
  • The degree to which the project demonstrates flexibility, respectfulness and creativity in preventing, identifying and removing barriers to accessibility
  • The degree to which the project conveys an inclusive attitude toward all persons with disabilities
