Municipal Accessibility Committee Milestones

The Municipal Accessibility Advisory Committee provides advice to City Council on improving access to facilities and services for persons with disabilities. It also monitors the city's progress on such initiatives.

Below are some of the accessibility milestones achieved by City Council, MAAC and the Staff Team during the period 2008 to 2010, as well as efforts still in progress.

Kingston City buses now have several routes with accessible features.

An Emergency Preparedness Plan for persons with disabilities

Assistive Listening systems and TTY for City services.

An accessible, on-demand taxi service.

A scent-sensitivity policy.

A review of on-going site plans and a checklist for future site plans.

Improved accessibility to new and traditional parking meters.

The improvement of accessibility at all municipal buildings and projects Projects including: the Grand Theatre, Memorial Centre Gardens and Leo LaFleur Pool, Lake Ontario Park, Wally Elmer Community Centre, Richardson Beach, Artillery Park, J.K. Tett Centre, K&P Trail, Track and Field, J. Machin Soccer Field.

Participation in the review and implementation of provincial Customer Service Standards.

The review of Draft Provincial Regulations for Accessibility in Transportation, Information and Communiation, Employment and Built Enviroment.

A new policy on City Requests for Proposals.

 

Splash pads in City Park and Fourth Avenue.

Consults on Calvin Park Library, Invista Centre, K-Rock Centre, Cataraqui Arena, museums.
