Seniors Advisory Committee

This committee reports to City Council and has a mandate to develop an "Age-Friendly" Plan for the City of Kingston in keeping with the theme and direction of the World Health Organization (WHO) and with the eight categories noted below and for other service areas that may be identified during the plan's development.

The Committee's term is expected to be 12 months and will conclude once the mandate has been fulfilled and council has adopted a recommended plan.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) the population of senior citizens (over age 65), throughout the world will more than double within the next few decades. In Canada, a number of municipalities have already developed "Age-Friendly" plans which focus on delivering these services to our seniors.

With one of the largest per capita seniors populations in the country, Kingston will understandably see an even greater increase in its demographic of senior citizens. The WHO recommends that cities throughout the western world develop "Age-Friendly" Plans focused on delivering services to seniors in the eight following categories:

  • Outdoor Spaces and Places
  • Transportation
  • Housing
  • Social Participation
  • Respect and Social Inclusion
  • Civic Participation and Inclusion
  • Communication and Information
  • Community Support and Health Service

The committee will receive research and project support from the Chief Administrative Officer's office and from selected staff from across city departments. The primary reference will be "Global Age-Friendly Cities: A Guide", published by the World Health Organization.

The Chair of the committee will provide status reports to Council on a regular basis during the committee term.
