PROCLAMATION

Independent Living Day
December 3, 2009

Details:

WHEREAS, Independent Living Centre Kingston and other Independent Living Centres across the country are recognizing December 3rd as Independent Living Day In Canada; and,

WHEREAS, the disabled community in Canada exceeds sixteen percent of our population; and

WHEREAS, by recognizing their contributions to our community, as entrepreneurs, decision-makers, employees, musicians, artists, volunteers, parents, grandparents; and

WHEREAS, by calling attention to their ability and willingness to contribute to Canada's economic, political and social communities; and

WHEREAS, for many among us, our future depends on the success of the Independent Living movement and of the efforts put forward by these individuals;

NOW THEREFORE, in recognition of the important work of the Independent Living Resources Centres and the members of the Independent Living movement, I, Harvey Rosen, Mayor of Kingston, do hereby proclaim Thursday, December 3, 2009, as Independent Living Day in Kingston, Ontario and urge all citizens to recognize the many contributions made to our community by persons with a disability.
