PROCLAMATION

Celebrate Cycling Week
May 31 to June 6, 2010

Details:

WHEREAS bicycles are an enjoyable and efficient form of transportation; and

WHEREAS bicycles are classified as vehicles under the Province of Ontario's Highway Traffic Act, and as such, are a viable option for travel; and

WHEREAS the City of Kingston has the third highest rate of cycle trips to work per capita in Canada; and

WHEREAS the City of Kingston is committed to being a bicycle-friendly city that encourages its citizens to use bicycles for commuting, recreation, and other purposes; and

WHEREAS the use of bicycles as a preferred mode of transportation and recreation is a healthy choice for both individuals and the environment; and

WHEREAS making the City of Kingston and surrounding area more bicycle-friendly is a sound development strategy which capitalizes on the rapidly growing cycling segment of the tourism market; and

WHEREAS Cycling Week promotes the utilitarian and recreational use of bicycles for these and other good reasons:

NOW THEREFORE I HEREBY PROCLAIM the week of May 31 through June 6, 2010, as "CELEBRATE CYCLING WEEK" in the City of Kingston.
