Situated beside the Cataraqui Town Centre on Gardiner's Road, Lions Civic Gardens has a natural amphitheatre setting that's perfectly suited to accommodate this kind of program, says Lesley Kimble, Special Event Coordinator with the City of Kingston.
"The venue is a wonderful place to host outdoor concerts," Kimble says. "It's wheelchair accessible and the amphitheatre setting really offers a nice casual experience, people bring their lawn chairs, and they relax and simply enjoy the music."
Kimble says the venue is "tried and tested for fun."
"We successfully run the summer 'Music in the Gardens' series of concerts at Lions Civic Gardens, every Sunday and Wednesday evening from 7 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Hundreds of spectators enjoy a variety of music including jazz, classical, folk and the golden oldies. So the June 30 event really is the beginning of that great program."
Beginning at 5:30 p.m. on June 30, people are invited to a BBQ hosted by the Kingston West Lions Club that runs until 10:30 p.m.
"We also have a mini golf course set up that will keep kids happy and the pony rides are always a big hit. The main stage will feature performances by the Spotlight Surfers Theatre group, local Irish, Ukrainian, Portuguese and Scottish dancers - and that all gets underway 5:30 p.m."
And while there are no fireworks at this years June 30 event (fire restrictions preclude using the venue for fireworks), Kimble says the musical finale featuring Ryan Malcolm will be equally spectacular.
"Ryan, his band and the music they play will definitely compensate for having no fireworks. He takes the stage at 9:15 p.m. and will play to 10:30 p.m. We are thrilled to have him join us for this special evening in a very special venue," she added.
