City Purchases Land Adjacent To Grass Creek Park

Potential Uses For 45-acre Waterfront Property To Be Reviewed

The City of Kingston has entered into an agreement to purchase 45 acres of property adjacent to Grass Creek Park in accordance with municipal policies for developing and sustaining public access to the City's waterfront.

"We are delighted to announce the purchase of this key piece of waterfront property adjacent to an existing City park," says Mayor Harvey Rosen. "The City has recognized the need to expand our existing waterfront assets to keep pace with our population and the recreational and cultural needs of residents. We are doing this in a beautiful, natural setting at the eastern entrance to the City."

The property consists of 45 acres with 178 feet of St. Lawrence waterfront facing south on the Bateau Channel. The property, known as 2931 Highway 2 East, is located 15 minutes from Kingston next to Grass Creek Park. The total acquisition cost for the property including expenses was $803,000. The property, which has frontage along Highway 2, also includes a residence and a log cabin. The purchase is scheduled to be completed on Sept. 17, 2007.

The City will now review how this property fits into the Parks and Recreation Master Plan currently being developed. It is not yet known how, or if, all 45 acres will fit into plans for an expanded Grass Creek Park. Future plans may include providing additional fields for events at Grass Creek Park, an expanded parking area, and additional space for a network of trails for hiking and skiing.
