Grand Theatre Presents 2008-2009 Line-Up Announced
The City of Kingston's Cultural Director Brian McCurdy revealed the artistic line-up today for the 2008-2009 Grand Theatre Presents subscription series. Guests of the season launch announcement were treated to an exciting presentation outlining the internationally acclaimed artists who would be gracing the Grand Stage next season.
An open house will be held on Saturday, June 7 from 10am to 4pm. Members of the public can see the newly-renovated Grand Theatre, pick up a copy of the 08-09 season brochure, and purchase subscriptions for the line-up of "Grand Theatre Presents" performances. No tickets are required for this event.
The 08-09 Grand Theatre Presents line-up is the first time the venue has ever presented its own subscription series. The season opens on September 25, 2008 and includes 28 world-class presentations until May 10, 2009. The series on stage are:
Theatre - Some of Canada's finest artists including Rick Miller in his Simpsons / Shakespeare tribute MacHomer, Canadian comic Andy Jones, Don Beattie is his latest comedy Wingfield's Inferno, and a comedic collaboration with One Yellow Rabbit Theatre and the Rheostatics in Five Hole: Tales of Hockey Erotica.
Dance - The beauty, innovation and energy of dance comes to the Grand stage with acclaimed Canadian companies Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal and Compagnie Marie Chouinard, as well as one of America's most creative groups, Ailey II.
Comedy - The best comics from across the country will entertain in four side-splitting performances. Jon Dore and guests, The Dance Party of Newfoundland, The Second City Touring Company and the Just for Laughs Roadshow will deliver high-quality hilarity!
Classic Albums Live - Rock icons of the 60s and 70s come alive in three incredible performances. Live re-creations of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Bob Marley's Legend, and Led Zeppelin II will rock the Grand!
Global Beat - Celtic sounds come alive with three fiery concerts. Violin virtuoso Natalie MacMaster, Irish tenor John McDermott and the energetic spectacle of Bowfire will have your toes tapping.
Kidstage - Four family-friendly performances for audiences of all ages. The antics of Fred Garbo Inflatable Theater Company, a Christmas concert with Franklin the turtle, a touching performance with Sursaut Dance Company and the physical frolics of Jamie Adkins' Circus INCognitus will create memories for all members of the family.
Fresh Ignition - An innovative and exciting series for youth. The series opens with SQUID, a drum-corps with international influences. Fresh Ignition continues with Circa's 61 Circus Acts in 60 Minutes and concludes with Cranked, a hought-provoking look at drug culture through hip hop and spoken word presented by Green Thumb Theatre.
The Entertainers - Internationally-acclaimed musicians bring their talents to the Grand stage. The award-winning acappella group The Nylons present a special holiday show. The series continues with singing/songwriting duo Amy Sky and Marc Jordan, and Jill Barber performs a romantic Valentine's Day concert. The series concludes with the legendary singer, songwriter and social activist Arlo Guthrie.
SUBSCRIPTIONS
Series subscriptions and Choose Your Own packages go on sale Friday, June 6, at 10:30am.
Series subscriptions offer the subscriber up to 15% off regular single ticket prices as well as the first choice of the best seats. Series subscribers can purchase additional tickets at exclusive subscriber prices, and have the opportunity to renew their seats year after year.
Choose Your Own subscribers can pick four of more performances from all of the Grand Theatre Presents performances and save up to 10% off regular single ticket prices. This option is an excellent choice for those with discriminating tastes or schedule restrictions.
