Draft Sustainability Plan Topic Of Public Meetings
Community Conversations Help Hone Sustainable Kingston Plan
Kingston's community strategic planning committee, FOCUS Kingston will hold a series of upcoming community conversations on the first draft of Sustainable Kingston, an Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP) that will help guide Kingston toward its vision of becoming Canada's Most Sustainable City.
Each of the following meetings runs from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.:
- Central: Wednesday, Nov. 25 at the Kingston Frontenac Public Library, Central Branch (Wilson Room), 130 Johnson St.
- East: Thursday, Nov. 26 at the Glenburnie Fire Hall, 1485 Unity Rd.
- North: Wednesday, Dec. 2 at the Cataraqui Region Conservation Area (West Hall), 1641 Perth Rd.
- West: Thursday, Dec. 3 at the INVISTA Centre (Rona Hall), 1350 Gardiners Rd.
"This is a community-built plan and we need the community's input to make certain that it will also be a community-owned plan. This plan only works insofar as it will be endorsed, adopted and enacted by all of Kingston. Your investment in the sustainability plan is what will make it successful," says Linda Whitfield, Chair of the FOCUS Kingston Steering Committee.
This draft of Sustainable Kingston: Designing our Community's Future... Together is available for review at www.cityofkingston.ca/sustainability.
FOCUS has developed the draft Sustainable Kingston plan with extensive input from individuals and organizations interested in one or more of the pillars in the draft plan's sustainability framework: Cultural Vitality, Economic Health, Environmental Responsibility, and Social Equity. The plan's guiding principles, themes, and goals were developed at this spring's Sustainability Summit.
FOCUS Kingston and contributing volunteers aim to have the Sustainable Kingston plan - including a report on the state of sustainability - ready for action in 2010.
"We are in the midst of exploring a number of indicators that will tell us how we might measure our success at becoming more sustainable," says Whitfield.
