Information Radio Service Offers City Updates 24/7

Tune In To 106.3FM For Road Conditions, Weather, City Notices

The City of Kingston is making municipal information available to residents in a new audio format being broadcast over local airwaves and online.

Kingston Information Radio broadcasts commercial-free local information of use to both Kingstonians and visitors 24 hours a day at 106.3 FM and www.informationradio.ca. The programming features a recurring 10-minute loop of public information with updates on time, road closures and traffic conditions, weather and other Kingston information, such as:

  • Emergency and public safety information;
  • Changes to Green Bin, recycling and waste collection schedules;
  • Holiday closure notices;
  • Announcements of disruptions to facilities, services or programs (such as Kingston Transit detours);
  • Updates on City of Kingston projects and initiatives;
  • Tourism Kingston and Kingston Police messages;
  • Grand Theatre, K-Rock Centre and other City of Kingston event listings;
  • Public meeting announcements.

"Information Radio is another tool the City is using to communicate to our residents," says Therese Greenwood, Manager of Communications. "We continue to work with other radio stations and media partners to make sure that residents and those visiting Kingston receive City-related news they can use in a timely and appropriate manner."

Greenwood notes that an Amber Alert issued earlier this week by Kingston Police was announced on Information Radio and sent out on the City's Twitter feed - two communication tools that can reach tuned-in residents almost instantly.

This non-commercial, license-exempt radio service is operated by Information Radio, the operator of similar stations in such municipalities as Ottawa, Halifax, Brockville, Cornwall and Fredericton. The content conforms to Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission rules for municipal radio stations designed for this purpose.

Information Radio's signal range extends for 10 kilometres either side of the antenna on the City of Kingston's water tower on Gardiner's Road. The radio station can also be accessed from the City's website at www.cityofkingston.ca/informationradio.
