When are my taxes due?

A: Your taxes are due by Friday, Feb. 26, 2010.

How was my 2010 interim tax bill calculated?

A: Your 2010 interim tax bill is based on 50 per cent of your 2009 final tax bill.

If you own a property on which taxes were only billed for part of 2009: we use a restated 2009 tax levy. This restated 2009 tax levy includes the additional taxes that would have been levied if the property had been fully taxed for the entire year.

For new properties not billed taxes in 2009: your tax bill has been calculated by multiplying the 2010 assessed value of your property by the interim tax rate and applying an adjustment (credit) to arrive at an amount equal to 50% of the 2009 taxes, had they been levied.

Past due amounts on this tax bill include pre-calculated interest, which is due if your account was not paid up before Jan. 31. Actual interest will be charged to tax accounts for past-due amounts on Feb. 1. If you made a payment on your account between the billing date and Jan. 31, call Customer Service at 613-546-0000 for an updated balance before paying your 2010 interim tax bill.

What are assessment class/property codes?

A: Assessment codes determine the appropriate tax rate(s) and school support to be applied to your property.

  • The first letter in the code represents the tax class: R = Residential, F = Farm, T = Managed Forest
  • The code's second letter shows the tax liability associated with a property: T = Fully Taxable
  • The code's third and fourth letters indicate school support (please see your MPAC assessment notice for details)

What is the Provincial Reassessment Program?

A: All properties in Ontario are assessed by the province's Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC). MPAC classifies properties and determines their value. Under the Assessment Act, increases in value, from Jan 1/05 valuation to Jan 1/08 valuation date, will be phased in over four years (2009-12). 2010 taxes will be calculated on the phased-in assessment as reported on your assessment notice. Your 2010 assessment is also printed on your interim tax bill.

A: Your property's assessment reflects the market value of your property and determines the taxes you pay.

A: You can obtain information on your property's assessment at www.cityofkingston.ca/assessment. Learn how to appeal your assessment from the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation. Call Toll-Free Number: 1-866-296-MPAC (6722).

Assessment rolls, which contain property information, are also available for viewing by members of the public at the City's tax offices at City Hall, 216 Ontario St., Kingston, Ontario.

How can I pay my tax bill?

  • Pay by mail: City of Kingston - Taxation, P.O. Box 640, Kingston, ON K7L 4X1. Please make your cheque payable to City of Kingston.
  • Pay in person: Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the City Hall payment centre, 216 Ontario St. Note: The payment centre at John Counter Blvd. has closed.
  • Pay through your bank: Contact your bank for details.
  • Use the 24-hour drop box to pay by cheque: The drop-box is located at 1211 John Counter Blvd. Please do not place cash in the drop box.
  • Pay through a pre-authorized debit plan
