Tax Rebate Programs

The following Tax Rebate Programs are available for properties and charities that meet specific criteria.

You can download printable versions of the associated application forms from this page. Applications for these programs are also available at City Hall, 216 Ontario Street, or by calling 613-546-0000.

REGISTERED CHARITY PROPERTY TAX REBATE

This rebate program is applicable to registered charities that are tenants in a commercial or industrial class property. The landlord may be contacted by the charity to provide certain information that the City requires in order to process their application. Deadline for the year 2009 application is March 1, 2010.

REBATES FOR VACANT UNITS IN COMMERCIAL/INDUSTRIAL PROPERTY

To be eligible for a rebate, a building or portion of a building must satisfy certain conditions. Property owners may submit a maximum of two applications per property per year. See the rebate application for details. Deadline for the year 2009 application is March 1, 2010.

NO MORE GARBAGE-COLLECTION REBATES

As a result of changes to the Municipal Act, the City of Kingston is required to change its policies for garbage service provision and the manner in which it levies ratepayers for garbage services. The City of Kingston will no longer offer a garbage collection rebate program. Information on municipal garbage disposal services can be found on this Web site.

A HERITAGE PROPERTY TAX REFUND PROGRAM

Under the provisions of the Municipal Act, 2001, a 40% tax refund per property (subject to a maximum of $5,000 or the total cost of maintenance and eligible work as well as specific eligibility criteria), has been established for properties with a heritage easement agreement. This refund will be awarded at a maximum of once every three years to ensure the longevity of the program. The tax relief will be processed as a refund after payment of taxes. Consistent with the deadlines that are applicable to other refund programs under the Municipal Act, 2001, property owners will have until the last day in February of the year following the tax year to apply for the tax refund. For example, the deadline for the 2009 tax year is February 26, 2010.
