City Council Salutes Sir John A. Macdonald
The following motion appears on the agenda for the January 11, 2005, meeting of Kingston City Council.
Moved by Councillor Patterson;
Seconded by Councillor Stoparczyk:
WHEREAS today, January 11, 2005, is the birthday of the First Prime Minister, John A. Macdonald, who, at the age of 5, immigrated with his parents from Scotland to Canada, settled in Kingston and articled here as a lawyer, and;
WHEREAS Macdonald began his political career by being elected in Ward 4 to a seat on the Kingston Town Council in 1843, and;
WHEREAS, in 1844, he was elected to represent Kingston in Parliament, serving in a series of cabinet positions, and;
WHEREAS Macdonald played a pivotal role in bringing about the Confederation of Canada, the founding of our nation in 1867, and was decorated Sir John A. Macdonald by the Queen for his nation building, and;
WHEREAS, as the First Prime Minister, he overcame great controversy to unify the new nation by building a railway from East to West, and;
WHEREAS "Sir John A became popularly known as the Father of Confederation and is recognized as Kingston's most famous political figure;
THEREFORE, on the anniversary of his birthday, we resolve to salute his achievements and be proud of the fame he has brought to our City.
