The Ontario Heritage Act requires a Municipality to keep a formal Register of all properties that have been identified to be of cultural heritage value or interest. The City of Kingston Heritage Properties Register, available at right, identifies a number of different types of heritage properties such as World Heritage Sites (Rideau Canal and the Kingston Fortifications), National Historic Sites, Provincial Heritage Properties, properties protected under the Ontario Heritage Act, and "Listed Properties" (also known as Section 27 Properties). It also includes those properties that have been de-designated or demolished.

Developing the Heritage Properties Register

This Register was developed by drawing upon previous inventories from the former City of Kingston, the former Kingston Township, and the former Pittsburgh Township. This website was also created to help interested parties locate heritage properties and learn more about them.

This Register is a dynamic document and is a work in progress. New information is being added on a regular basis. Please note that the information is provided for the purposes of convenience only. For accurate reference, please consult the Planning and Development Department.

Available at right are:

  • City of Kingston Properties of Cultural Heritage Value and Interest ("Listed Properties")
This consolidated document provides information on all of the "Listed Properties" in the City of Kingston. All of the properties within this document have been formally added to the City's Heritage Properties Register by a resolution of Kingston City Council.
  • City of Kingston Heritage Properties Register — Spreadsheet
This document identifies all of the properties on the City's Heritage Properties Register. It includes the Address, Parcel Identification, and Type of Designation. It is meant as a quick reference guide. It does not provide the Reasons for Designation or a Statement of Significance for the properties. For this information, you will need to contact the Planning and Development Department.
  • Coming Soon: City of Kingston Heritage Properties Register — GIS Mapping
This new feature will allow for a more in-depth exploration of heritage properties in Kingston. The mapping not only will show the different types of heritage properties, but will provide information and photos for each property. The anticipated launch date is Summer 2011.
