John Counter Boulevard

Budget: The budget for this project is now under review

THE PROJECT:

Making John Counter Boulevard into a four-lane roadway with cycling lanes and a railway overpass will improve the flow of traffic — more than 18,000 cars daily use the road. The project stretches 3.5 km from Division Street to Princess Street passing by the VIA Rail station. In addition to widening the road, a centre turn lane, cycling lanes, sidewalks and landscaped boulevards will be added, intersections improved — and a new bridge will be built over the CN rail line to replace the level crossing where traffic now stops to accommodate more than 75 trains a day. The intersection at Portsmouth Avenue will move east and away from rail lines, requiring Portsmouth Avenue to curve into William Hackett Park and the removal of the existing soccer field. A junior soccer field, containing two mini-fields and a children’s play area will be built at William Hackett Park. In the meantime, a new field has been built at Markers Acre Park.

UPDATE:

The City is pursuing cost-sharing with CN Rail and will pursue provincial and federal funding initiatives as they become available over the course of the project.
