Fire & Rescue Training Centre
Work to prepare the site of the six-storey training tower begins in early-August. The assembly of the tower marks the implementation of Phase 1 of the multi-year plan to build the Centre which will be completed in 2018.
Located off Terry Fox Drive
On March 30, the City purchased 23 acres of land to establish a state-of-the-art training facility for Kingston Fire and Rescue. Located off of Terry Fox Drive immediately north of the Ontario Ministry of Transportation property on John Counter Boulevard, the property was owned by the provincial government and purchased through the Ontario Realty Corporation. An overview of the location of the Centre is available at right.
Phase one: site servicing
and training tower
The training facility will be built in phases over several years from 2011 to 2018. Phase 1 [PDF 436KB] is planned for 2011-2012 and includes site servicing and the assembling of the six-storey training tower. Phase 1 will cost $5.3 million and was approved by Council as part of Kingston Fire and Rescue's 2011-2012 capital budget. The Master Plan for site development and the conceptual design for Phase 1 are both available for download at right.
Future phases of construction of the Centre will include:
- exterior training areas with various props;
- a training building with classrooms;
- a warehouse and storage building; and
- an apparatus and equipment maintenance garage.
Background
The Centre is being developed in accordance with the Master Fire Plan (see link at right) which recommended the establishment of a training facility where emergency response personnel can develop their skills. Council adopted the recommendation in 2010.
This Centre will also be available to local industry, education institutions and other emergency services in Eastern Ontario. A copy of the Master Fire Plan and its recommendations is available on the City of Kingston website at www.cityofkingston.ca/firemasterplan.
