Turn Off Your Lights For Earth Hour

8:30 P.M. TO 9:30 P.M. SATURDAY MARCH 27, 2010

Kingston will participate in Earth Hour in 2010. Between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, lights will go off around the world to mark Earth Hour — a global event to acknowledge humanity's impact on climate change.

Kingstonians can celebrate Earth Hour together by turning off their lights and heading to Springer Market Square between 7 and 10 p.m. for the third annual volunteer-organized "Kingston Unplugged" concert.

At 7 p.m., educational and vendor displays will be open to the public, and local musicians will offer acoustic performances.

At 8 p.m., a candlelit, solar and wind-powered, off-grid concert will begin, featuring music from local artists Miss Emily (Fennell), Mojo Shooter and Reuben de Groot. Guest speakers include Ontario Environment Minister John Gerretsen, the winner of a local high school sustainability speech competition, and other special guests.

The City of Kingston will darken downtown at 8:30 p.m. in recognition of the WWF's Earth Hour.

During Earth Hour 2009, Kingston proudly decreased its energy consumption by 14 per cent or 13,462 kWh and more than 600 people enjoyed "Kingston Unplugged" in Market Square. This year's Kingston Unplugged's goal is to reach a 20 per cent reduction in electricity consumption, while gathering over 1000 Kingstonians to celebrate our community's commitment and success in improving the environmental and economic sustainability of our energy supply.

Earth Hour originated in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. The campaign now reaches around the globe.

To add power to Earth Hour, residents are also being encouraged to register their participation in Saturday night's lights-out event at www.earthhour.org.
