Greenhouse Gas Reduction

Through relatively small changes in individual behavior, the Kingston Community collectively can make a big difference. Provided below are a few examples of choices that individuals can make on the road and in the home to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save money!

On the Road

  • Do not idle your car when you are stopped for more than 10 seconds - Reduce 0.2 tonnes/yr
  • Walk or cycle instead of driving to do short errands, twice a month - Reduce 0.4 tonnes/yr
  • Check your vehicle's tire pressure once a month - Reduce 0.125 tonnes/yr
  • Keep your vehicle properly tuned -Reduce 0.2 tonnes/yr
  • Drive at the posted speed limit - Reduce 0.5 tonnes/yr
  • Take a bus or carpool one day every week- Reduce 0.4 tonnes/yr

At Home

  • Replace 5 regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs - Reduce 0.15 tonnes/yr
  • Wash your clothes in cold water and hang them to dry on a clothesline -Reduce 0.2 tonnes/yr
  • Buy a programmable thermostat and lower it at night by 3 degrees Celsius - Reduce 0.5 tonnes/yr
  • Use caulking and weather-stripping - Reduce 0.5 tonnes/yr
  • Upgrade your insulation in the walls, basement and attic - Reduce 0.5 tonnes/yr
  • Install one of today's energy-efficient furnaces - Reduce 0.5 tonnes/yr
  • Have an Energuide for Houses evaluation completed on your home to determine how you can reduce emissions and save money
