UPDATE ON SOLID WASTE TASK FORCE

When Kingston City Council moved to a standing committee system, the work of the Solid Waste Task Force was moved to the Operations Committee. The Operations Committee is one of five standing committees struck in 2005. The committee deals with issues related to the Operations Department, including transit, roads, solid waste, properties, fleet, parking airport, utilities (water sewer and gas) and bicycling.

ARCHIVE: TASK FORCE BACKGROUND

Kingston's Solid Waste Task Force is a committee of council that is developing a long term strategic direction for the City's solid waste service.

The task force drafted a series of recommendations that, after public consultation, were finalized and forwarded to Kingston City Council for deliberation and approval.

Two public meetings were planned as part of the public consultation effort.

The mandate of the solid waste task force has been to:

  • Examine methods of increasing waste diversion, such as, but not limited to, increasing the number of blue box recyclables, decreasing bag limits for untagged garbage, encouraging backyard composting, and household organics collection.
  • Look at new methods of waste management that may be appropriate for the City and examine the experience of other cities.
  • Examine the best means of improving public education and awareness.
  • Examine other matters that will improve the waste management service to our residents in an environmentally sound and fiscally responsible manner.
  • Report its recommendations to Council.

The changes proposed will reduce the amount of waste going to landfill sites, and will increase the City's current waste diversion rate of 38% to a diversion rate of 50% or more says the task force.
