INVISTA CENTRE PROJECT ARCHIVE:
Considering Alternative Uses For Older Arenas
By 2008, the City's new four-pad arena will be ready to meet the ice time needs of local hockey teams and other users, which means older arenas will no longer be needed for those purposes.
A series of public consultation meetings were held in September to gather ideas on potential alternative uses for Cook Brothers, Harold Harvey and Wally Elmer. More than 180 participants attended those sessions, and proposed uses ranging from social service programs to indoor recreation sports and multi-purpose community uses.
Dozens of additional suggestions for alternative uses for those three arenas have also been received through the City's telephone hotline as well as the City's Web site and by e-mail. Currently staff from the City's Recreation and Leisure Services Department are reviewing the public input together with staff analysis, consultant reports, and partnership and user proposals that have been coming forward since the public meetings.
That work is expected to culminate in a series of business cases for recommended options to be reviewed with stakeholders and presented to Council at a later date.
If you wish to submit additional comments or proposals for alternative uses for these three arenas, please send them by e-mail to arenas@cityofkingston.ca.
