Regional Sports & Entertainment Centre Update
This is a brief update on the Kingston Regional Sports and Entertainment Centre. These updates will be issued to you on a monthly basis and can be used for circulation to your membership.
Additional Seats
Council approved a change in scope in September to add approximately 650 seats at no additional cost. This change in scope included the removal of retractable seating and a change in seating lay out. There will be a premium zone created at the end zone where high top tables and high stools will be set up for full bowl events. Copies of the revised seating layout can be obtained by contacting Chris Empey at cempey@cityofkingston.ca.
Construction Update
Construction activities that took place during September include completion of steel erection, roofing system, exterior precast cladding and limestone work. Work in the next month will continue on the roof, the walls, limestone, curtainwall, windows, landscaping and work on some interior finishes.
It was expected that the building would be fully enclosed by October 18th; however critical elements of the building envelope will more likely be completed by November 1st, 2007. Limestone work is scheduled to continue in November.
Subcontractors have been working extended hours and weekends. The construction on site is being coordinated with work around the site being conducted by Utilities Kingston, Transportation and Engineering.
Fundraising Campaign
In early October, a major gift of $50,000 was donated to the campaign by Empire Life. DVA Navion and the Fundraising Committee have started the major gift phase of the campaign which is focused on larger donations. The campaign is also being extended by one month considering the extension of the pre-opening period.
In September, there were a few events held during which the Sports and Entertainment Centre fundraising campaign was promoted: the introduction of the 2007/08 Kingston Frontenacs Hockey Team on September 18th and the Chamber of Commerce Autumn Business Mixer on September 27.The Chamber of Commerce 'Doing Business with the Kingston Regional Sports and Entertainment Centre' session featuring Ken Wong from the Queen's School of Business took place earlier this week. The event, which helped local businesses find a way to leverage the positive impact the Centre will have on their bottom line, raised $10,000 for the campaign. Another event organized by the Canadian Army Veterans' Motorcycle Unit is planned during the fall season.
The City has currently received a total of $630,000 in donations and pledges to the project, which is about 31 percent of the fundraising goal. The campaign was launched on May 1, 2007. Donations can be made by contacting Chris Empey in the campaign office which is located on the main floor of City Hall. He can also be reached by phone at 613-546-4291, ext 1610 or by email at donate@kbuild.ca. You can also donate to the campaign by printing the donation form off at www.kbuild.ca and faxing it to 613-546-3004.
Kingston and District Sports Hall of Fame
Staff have reached a preliminary agreement on space, layouts and operational matters with the Kingston and District Sports Hall of Fame. A draft memorandum of understanding should be finalised in the next month. This will provide the Sports Hall of Fame with office/storage space within the Centre as well as display space for plaques on the main concourse and display cases within the Centre.
Interior Acoustics
State of the Art Acoustik recently measured a number of additional acoustic options:
- Wall treatment on the back wall of the south concourse
- Tile on the underside of the suites
- Ductliner board at the vertical roof gable ends
- Acoustic deck at the east roof
- Hanging baffles
The four first options were modeled and provided the following reverberation times:
- Centre at full capacity - 2.3 seconds
- Centre at 2/3 capacity - 2.5 seconds
- Centre at 1/3 capacity - 2.6 seconds
- Centre empty - 2.8 seconds
Hanging baffles were recently modeled by State of the Art Acoustik and were showing a reduction in reverberation time of 0.02 seconds with 750 hanging baffles. This measure is being reviewed with a different type of material.
The original acoustic modeling provided for a reverb time of 2.8 seconds at full capacity.
The intent of the contract is to provide an acoustic system similar to facilities such as:
- John Labatt Centre (2.0 to 2.25 seconds with an empty bowl);
- Ricoh Centre;
- GM Place (2.5 seconds with an empty bowl) and;
- Air Canada Centre
Reverberation times for Ricoh Centre and Air Canada Centre have not yet been obtained. Information will be reported back to council if and when it is available.
The City also had State of the Art Acoustik produce an acoustic modeling for the theatre mode set up which uses about 1/3 of the bowl and has a seating capacity of about 2,000 people. This modeling is showing a reverberation time of 1.0 seconds empty and 0.8 seconds at full capacity.
City staff and Arcturus/SMG have met with Glen Fast from the Kingston Symphony to review acoustical requirements for the Symphony's performance and to ensure that they are met within the Centre.
The City has also involved Engineering Harmonics to review some acoustic measures and to provide an overview on acoustics and sound within the Centre. Engineering Harmonics worked on acoustics at the John Labatt Centre. Engineering Harmonics will provide a report in the second week of October.
