Before construction began on the area now known as Springer Market Square, the Cataraqui Archaeological Research Foundation (CARF) undertook an exploration of the site to uncover and catalogue the remaining evidence of its history. Below are updates of the dig provided by the CARF team.
In 2004, City Council, taking direction from a series of Community Priorities outlined by FOCUS Kingston, approved the revitalization of what is now Springer Market Square as one of the Group of 7 Community Priority projects.

In 2005, an archeological dig uncovered the history of Kingston's Market Square before work began on the $5.4-million revamping of the public space.
