Battery Park
Battery Park features an event space marked by this compass rose.
On June 28, 2010, the City of Kingston officially opened the park on the 'Block D' property at the foot of Earl Street. This park is now called Battery Park — a name that is derived from the historic Mississauga Battery that was located on the Block D property in the early 1800s. Council endorsed this name change at the time it approved the final park design.
The design and construction of Battery Park has been completed in partnership with the City and Homestead Land Holdings. The design was developed in collaboration with the public through feedback offered at two open houses on the project in June 2007 and January 2008.
Highlights of the park include:
- Continuous limestone seating wall along the south side of the park. This wall abuts a waterfront pathway that varies in width from the 6 m perimeter to 12 metres from the edge of the shoreline rock revetment.
- Event plaza in the middle of the park in line with the Earl Street extension. This area is accessed by both stairs and a ramp system from Earl Street. The event area detailing is a compass rose and will include the cardinal points of the compass on it.
- Trees, shrubs, benches, lighting, bike racks, bollards, waste receptacles and a balance of drought resistant varieties of turf and plant materials making up a nice balance of green space.
- Fight of the Royal George commemorative plaque.
- LED lighting with both the City of Kingston and the Waterfront Trail logos on the plate face.
- Plantings and railing buffer between the Marriot parking lot and the pathway.
- Retention of the existing poplars on the site, to be protected by tree wells.
- Improvements to the foot of Gore Street and William Street (this is work do be done by the City of Kingston to increase the public visual profile of this new public park).
The City partnered with Homestead Land Holdings to build Kingston's newest waterfront park at the foot of Earl Street.
