Proposed Barriefield Land Acquisition

The City is studying the feasibility of acquiring federal surplus lands at Barriefield Village for $1 for the purpose of building affordable housing on that site.

An initial Public Information Centre on this subject was held July 6 and an online Your Opinion opportunity to submit comments and concerns ran until July 30.

A second public meeting was held August 9. For printed or electronic copies of the presentation made during that meeting, please contact Hollis Amey at hamey@cityofkingston.ca

Citizens were also asked to review ande comment on the Development Concept (below) presented at the August 9 meeting. That comment period ended August 18.

BARRIEFIELD FEASIBILITY STUDY

The second Public Information Centre was held on Monday, August 9, 2010 at Memorial Hall. The purpose of this meeting was to provide a summary of the study's findings to date; identify development constraints and opportunities; and to review the potential development concepts.

A potential development concept was presented to the public for comment. The following is a breakdown of development by parcel:

  • Parcel 1: developed as public parkland
  • Parcel 2: 2-storey seniors apartment with 32 units
  • Parcel 3: single detached dwellings (13 units) and a semi detached dwelling (2 units)

The potential development concept will be reviewed and evaluated based on the findings of the technical studies and input received.

The feasibility study will be presented to City Council for direction on Tuesday, September 7, 2010.
