EMPLOYMENT OPTIONS

Your Case Manager can direct you to agencies and services that will assist you with your employment goals, such as:

  • Our on-site assessor for upgrading and education;
  • The Ontario Works Employment Assistance Program for Employment Placements, Community Placements, training information, and on-site workshops;
  • Employment resource centres for updating and creating resumes, faxing, photocopying, and other job search activities.

ASSISTING YOUR JOB SEARCH

Case Managers have several resources available to assist in a job search. Our job boards are conveniently located in the waiting rooms at 362 Montreal Street. There are also many other community resources and employment services in the Kingston area.

Other available supports include assistance with:

  • Transportation;
  • Safety equipment;
  • Clothing/uniforms.

Please speak with your case manager for additional information about available supports.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING  [Top]

While receiving Ontario Works assistance you can participate in education upgrading or job specific skills training such as:

  • Completing your Grade 12 diploma or equivalency;
  • Improving language skills;
  • Upgrading reading, math, and writing skills;
  • Training required for certain jobs such as basic computer skills, typing, forklift operations, personal support worker (PSW).

EMPLOYMENT PLACEMENT  [Top]

Employment Placement is a program where job-ready participants are matched to paid employment opportunities. Individuals who are ready to begin employment can find referrals to jobs posted on our job boards at our local office. Many Kingston employers work with the Ontario Works office and provide our staff with job postings on a regular basis. Financial incentives to hire and train Ontario Works participants may be available to these employers.

WORKSHOPS/JOB SPECIFIC SKILLS TRAINING  [Top]

For those participants experiencing difficulty in finding employment, job specific skills training workshops are available. These workshops may give participants the necessary competitive edge to secure employment.

SELF EMPLOYMENT  [Top]

Applicants or participants are able, where approved by a case manager, to pursue self employment activities as a means of achieving self-reliance. To learn more about this option, please contact your case manager.

Helpful hints to find employment:

  • Keep your resume updated;
  • Watch job postings regularly;
  • Talk to other job seekers;
  • Network with employers, family, friends, and business associates;
  • Stay with it and stay positive;
  • Volunteer;
  • Check out a job finding club;
  • Keep track of your job search and follow up with a phone call to the employer.
