Solar Energy Project Underway

Work is underway on the installation of a 10 kW solar photovoltaic system on the roof of the terminal building.

The electricity generated by the solar panels will be fed to the electrical distribution network under a microFIT agreement with the Ontario Power Authority.

The terminal is already at the leading edge of technology leading towards a greener footprint for the airport. To our knowledge, Kingston Airport terminal is the only airport terminal in Canada that has geo-thermal heat pumps as a primary source of heating and air conditioning. During the last two years, building systems were modified to enable better controls of the inside environment, all lights were exchanged with low-energy types, some airfield lighting is being modified to produce lower energy consumption by switching to LED or CFL-type bulbs and the parking lot is now lit with 100% LED lights.

Over the next year, new building control systems are planned. This new system will enable more efficient use of energy while not impacting the interior environment for our passengers.
