Reconstruction On Division Street And Bath Road

Sections of Division Street and Bath Road, two of the city's main arteries, are scheduled for reconstruction as part of the City's extensive infrastructure maintenance program that includes roads, bicycle lanes, sidewalks, and underground sewer systems.

Rebuilding Division Street

Eight blocks of Division Street — from Fraser Street to Quebec Street — will be completely reconstructed in 2011.

The reconstruction includes:

  • rebuilding roads, curbs, and sidewalks;
  • creating new 930m sanitary sewer system and watermain;
  • replacing 490m of a gas main;
  • the addition of cycling lanes.

This one kilometre stretch of roadwork is Phase One of a longer-term plan to renew this vital Kingston thoroughfare, one of the main entries to the city.

"This is a major route used to get from the 401 to downtown, Queen's University and Kingston General Hospital. It's one of the city's most crucial arteries and that puts it up near the top of our priority list," says Jim Keech, President and C.E.O., Utilities Kingston.

This project will also include the rebuilding of Guy Street from Division to Carleton Street, a local road that is now in very poor condition.

Bridge Work & Bicycle Lanes On Bath Road

Bath Road, a major route between the west end of the city and downtown, will be under construction this year from Queen Mary Road to Centennial Drive.

This project includes:

  • water main improvements;
  • storm sewer and street light upgrades;
  • work to improve the ride over the railway track crossing; work to the bridge over the Little Cataraqui Creek;
  • rehabilitation of the roadway between Queen Mary and Armstrong Roads and traffic signal upgrades at Armstrong;
  • new asphalt overlay from Queen Mary Road to Centennial Road;
  • the addition of bicycle lanes; reconstruction of side walks; and new landscaping.

During the course of this work, traffic on this section of Bath Road will be reduced to one lane in either direction.
