Step Safe Program

Reducing the number and severity of falls by seniors on pedestrian walkways is the main objective of the Step Safe Program.

City residents who spot a potential hazard i.e., uneven concrete or cracks in the sidewalk are encouraged to call Customer Service at 613-546-0000 and report it. A Customer Service Representative will take down the information and generate a work order. The Roads Department will then be dispatched to the site and either fix the potential hazard, or mark it with fluorescent green paint as a warning to Step Safe!

Falling on pedestrian sidewalks is a real concern for many seniors that can affect the quality of life. Did you know that:

  • One in three seniors fall each year?
  • Falls are the leading cause of death in people over the age of 65?
  • 90 percent of hip fractures are caused by falls?
  • 40 percent of falls result in seniors being admitted to nursing homes?

For more information on how to prevent falls please call the KFL&A Health Unit at 613-549-1232.
