Street Sweeping
The City has four (4) street sweepers in its fleet and is charged with the responsibility of cleaning and maintaining approximately 1,300 lane kilometers of urban and suburban streets.
The street sweepers clean the streets by mechanical or regenerative air vacuum means and collect it in on board hoppers. When the hoppers are full, the sweepers will travel to transfer sites or will empty the full hopper directly into tandem dump trucks, for more efficient haulage.
Spring Street Sweeping
Spring Cleanup Sweeping, typically gets underway, mid-March to mid-April, depending on weather conditions. For this cleanup operation, Public Works staff will work three shifts per day, to try to complete this task in approximately the following 8 weeks.
The spring time cleanup is the heaviest and most time consuming, due to the accumulation through the fall, winter and spring, of debris and winter sand. Where possible, median islands and adjacent sidewalks will be swept before the street sweepers make their pass. Often, more than one pass is required to sufficiently clean the street, and that's why you typically will see two sweepers working in tandem.
The Spring Cleanup sweeping operation, typically includes a flusher truck that loosens and dampens the accumulated debris, to enhance the sweeping and reduce dust, followed by one, two or sometimes three sweepers, and attendant tandems to haul away the sweepings.
Beginning mid-March to mid-April, again depending on weather conditions, crews will carry out the cleanup sweeping by areas, as outlined in the following schedule. This is an approximate schedule, as it is affected by weather conditions and winter sand accumulations encountered.
The City of Kingston, Public Works Department, appreciates your patience, during our Spring Cleanup Sweeping operations.
