Snow And Ice Responsibilities
In addition to the City's snow removal efforts, bylaws are in place requiring businesses which front onto public sidewalks to:
- Remove snow and ice from the portion of the sidewalk fronting the location.
- Ensure slippery sidewalks fronting the location are covered with a suitable material, such as salt or sand.
- Remove snow and ice on the roof top and icicles hanging about the location.
Failing to remove ice and snow can be hazardous to pedestrians. To report unsafe conditions, contact the City's bylaw enforcement office at 613-546-4291, ext. 3135. Business owners who do not comply with these bylaws may face a fine of up to $5,000.
GOOD NEIGHBOURS SHOVEL THEIR SIDEWALKS
Homeowners can also adhere to the above rules to make the sidewalks, driveway and alley crossings in front of their houses safe for pedestrians.
Clearing snow and ice within 24 hours of a weather event is a good, neighbourly goal for homeowners.
