Kingston Transit: My Ride

Rack and Roll

Rack and Roll is a convenient way to travel by closing the gap between cycling and transit. Now available on every Kingston Transit bus during the cycling season for no extra charge, Rack and Roll offers cyclists a convenient way to travel with their bikes when they choose not to ride.

Some of the reasons cyclists list for using Rack and Roll include:

  • Sudden changes in the weather
  • Travelling through high traffic areas
  • Mechanical problem with bicycle
  • Take your bike to work so you can bike on your lunch hour or bike home at the end of the day
  • Any of the same reasons you would put your bike on your car.

Kingston Transit uses The SportworksTM bike rack. The stainless steel rack is lightweight and designed for easy loading and unloading. It can be raised and lowered with one hand, and will securely hold two bikes with wheels as small as 16 inches.

"RACK AND ROLL" IN 4 EASY STEPS

  1. Approach

Catch the driver's attention and indicate that you will be loading your bicycle. Always approach the rack from the curb.

  2. Open

Hold your bike with one hand and use the other to squeeze the handle and lower the rack.

  3. Load

Lift or roll your bike onto the rack, placing the wheels in the tracks as indicated on the rack.

  4. Secure

Lift the support arm and place it over your wheel. Be sure it rests at a level above the hub.

HELPFUL TIPS

  • While waiting for the bus, prepare your bicycle for the trip by removing loose items like water bottles.
  • When the bus arrives, be sure to get the driver's attention to indicate you will be loading your bike.
  • The first bike should be placed in the position furthest from the bus.
  • Raise the support arm over your wheel as high as it will go but not over the frame or fender.

Unloading:

  • When you reach your stop, notify the driver that you will be unloading your bike.
  • If the rack is empty after unloading your bike, fold it up until it locks in place before you step away from the bus.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • You are responsible to secure your bike properly. For safety reasons, Kingston Transit operators are not permitted to leave the bus to assist with loading and unloading of bikes.
