ANSWERS
Q: Why is the landfill closing to the public?
A: The landfill has been in operation since the 1980s. The public drop-off trench will reach its capacity by December 2010, as approved by the Ministry of the Environment.
A: If you regularly use the landfill as a method to dispose of waste, you will no longer be permitted to bring it to the landfill and will be required to use alternate methods of disposal. Here are some suggestions:
- If you have small amounts of waste that could be bagged, you can purchase bag tags for $2.00, attach them to your garbage bags, and place them out with your regular garbage. For locations where bag tags can be purchased please visit the City's website at www.cityofkingston.ca/residents/waste/garbage
-
Large items and excess garbage can also be taken to:
- BFI Canada at 1266 McAdoo's Lane, 613-548-4428
- Waste Management of Canada at 62 St. Remy's Place, 613-549-7401
- KIMCO at 1325 John Counter Boulevard, 613-544-1822 accepts dry waste only.
Q: Is the City still bringing garbage to the landfill?
A: Yes. The City will continue to bring waste collected from the east portion of the City to the garbage truck trench which has not yet reached capacity. For safety reasons, two trenches, one for the public and the other for the City's municipal garbage trucks were constructed.
