Waste Management Study

Goal: Divert 65% of residential waste
from landfills by 2012

The City is inviting the public to help decide what happens to Kingston's garbage after it is collected at curbside.

A November 2011 public meeting discussed a number of waste processing options that the City could incorporate in the future. Kingston's garbage — what's left after organic and recyclables have been separated out for collection in the Green Bin, Grey and Blues Boxes — now goes to landfill.

The options discussed are contained in the Residual Waste Processing Report available for review at right. They were the subject of a Your Opinion comment opportunity that ended on Dec. 2. The options outlined were recommended for exploration as a part of the City's Integrated Waste Management Study.

Waste Study Background

The City of Kingston is now in Phase B of its four stage development of its long-term strategy to manage organic and residual solid waste as part of an Integrated Waste Management system covering the next 25 year period. As a part of Phase B, long term waste management systems and goals were approved by City Council on July 15, 2008. From that, alternative management systems and approaches were identified and are now being more deeply considered.

On March 3, 2009, EITP recommended to Council that the City of Kingston further investigate options to increase waste diversion and reduce the quantity of waste going to landfill. As a part of this recommendation, City staff is required to receive public input on the preferred methods to increase waste diversion.

Phase C of the Study will identify the preferred system technology and practices to be employed and Phase D will develop a preferred system implementation strategy.
