Integrated Waste Management Study

Goal: Divert 65 per cent of residential waste from landfill by 2012.

The City of Kingston is now in Phase B of its four stage development of its long-term strategy to manage organic and residual solid waste as part of an Integrated Waste Management system covering the next 25 year period.

The Council-approved Phase A Report [PDF: 789KB] and Draft Phase B Report [PDF: 844KB] are available at right. Section 3.2, starting on page 14 of the Phase A Report, outlines the Environmental and Socio-Economic Goals and Objectives set for Kingston and will be of particular interest.

Two public consultation sessions were held Oct. 9 at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour.

The public consultation sessions and a Your Opinion survey are part of the Study's Phase B during which the City and the community will evaluate alternative waste management systems and identify a preferred system to achieve the goals and objectives established in Phase A.

Comments received will be addressed in the a Final Draft Phase B Report to be presented to the Environment, Infrastructure and Transportation Policies Committee for consideration. In addition to contributing at the public consultations and/or completing the online Your Opinion survey, residents may also send their comments by mail to:

Solid Waste, City of Kingston
216 Ontario St., Kingston, ON, K7L 2Z3
E-mail: jgiles@cityofkingston.ca
Fax: 613-544-8466.

Phase C of the Study will identify the preferred system technology and practices to be employed and Phase D will develop a preferred system implementation strategy.
