Goal: Divert 65% of residential waste from landfills by 2012
Integrated Waste Management Study
The City invited the public to learn about a number of waste diversion options the City is considering at a Waste Diversion Open House that was held on June 21. Residents were asked to share their thoughts on the best ways for Kingston to trim its waste and achieve its goal of diverting 65 per cent of waste from landfill.
The System Enhancement Component Options Staff Report at right was the subject of a Your Opinion survey comment opportunity which ended July 5.
Waste Study Background
The City of Kingston is now in Phase B of its four stage development of its long-term strategy to manage organic and residual solid waste as part of an Integrated Waste Management system covering the next 25 year period. As a part of Phase B, long term waste management systems and goals were approved by City Council on July 15, 2008. From that, alternative management systems and approaches were identified.
On March 3, 2009, EITP recommended to Council that the City of Kingston further investigate options to increase waste diversion and reduce the quantity of waste going to landfill. As a part of this recommendation, City staff is required to receive public input on the preferred methods to increase waste diversion.
Phase C of the Study will identify the preferred system technology and practices to be employed and Phase D will develop a preferred system implementation strategy.
