Waste Overview

HOW CAN I 'TRIM MY WASTE'?

  • Reduce:

Buy products with little or no packaging.
  • Reuse:

Buy reusable coffee filters, cloth table napkins and rechargeable batteries.
  • Recycle:

You can recycle up to 16 different items in your Blue & Grey Boxes.
  • Re-think:

Change the way you do things and you'll be surprised when you see your garbage shrinking!

Backyard Composting

Backyard composting is one of the most economical and easiest ways of disposing of kitchen and yard waste. In fact you can divert up to 35% of your total residential waste simply by composting! What's even more amazing is that you can use this rich organic material in your garden, yard and houseplants.

Leaf & Yard Waste

Leaf & yard waste can be dropped off at the Kingston Area Recycling Centre (KARC) and at the compost site located at Norterra Organics, 2069 Joyceville Rd. Yard waste is banned from landfill and should not be included in your regular garbage. Yard waste takes up a lot of space in a landfill site and it's less costly to compost this material.

Residents are reminded that Christmas trees are not collected by City crews. Christmas trees can be dropped off at either KARC or Norterra Organics, 2069 Joyceville Rd.

The Norterra Organics site operates Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (For more information, contact Norterra Organics, 613-546-0884)

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

Paint, propane cylinders, household cleaners, oil, batteries, etc., can be brought to KARC. KARC operates a HHW depot every Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., April-November. You can drop off your HHW for no charge and at the same time pick up left over paint and other materials for reuse. Most HHW can be recycled or reused so please don't pour it down the drain, or put it in your garbage!

Reducing waste is easy if you put it in its place!
