Recycling For Those In Apartments

Kingston has more than 11,000 multi-residential units, accounting for almost 25 per cent of the city's population. The majority of these buildings participate in the City's recycling program. Those who are living in multi-unit buildings will want to familiarize themselves with which items are recyclable (see Recycling and Waste Item Lookup links at right).

BUILDING WITH 25 UNITS OR FEWER

In buildings with 25 units or fewer, each individual unit has its own Blue and Grey Box. Each resident in such a building is responsible for having his or her recyclables to the curb on the appropriate collection day.

Blue and Grey Boxes for new residents in apartment buildings with 25 units or fewer are available at the Kingston Area Recycling Centre (KARC, 196 Lappan's Lane) and City Hall. Lost and broken boxes with be replaced free of charge. Bring broken boxes to KARC for recycling. Extra boxes are available for $6 each.

26 UNITS OR MORE IN THE BUILDING

For buildings with 26 units or more, residents have large blue carts into which they can place their recyclable items. Reusable blue recycling bags can be used to store your papers and containers in your apartment to transport your recyclables to the blue carts. These bags cost $3 at the Kingston Area Recycling Centre at 196 Lappan's Lane (open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

Note: Please do not place unemptied plastic bags in recycling carts. Empty your recyclables from the plastic bag into the appropriate cart and then place your empty plastic bags in the cart labeled "Papers".

SORTING RECYCLABLES IN BLUE CARTS

The blue carts take all the same items as Blue and Grey Boxes — but the sorting is a bit different.

Each building has four separate carts to sort: papers, containers, clear glass and coloured glass. Below is a list of some items and where they go. For further detail on how to dispose of a waste item, see the Waste Item Lookup at right.
