What Goes In Your Blue Box

BOTTOMS UP:
CHECK YOUR PLASTICS'S RECYCLABILITY

Image: A blue box.

Like you, the City sorts its garbage separating out its recyclables. The City does not collect #1 plastics that do not use screw tops because these items are not purchased by those who recycle plastic.

To determine an item's plastic content, look at the bottom of the plasctic item. You will notice a number:

  • The City continues to collect #1 plastics that do use screw tops (like water and pop bottles and peanut butter containers), as well as #2, #4, #5 and #6 plastics.
  • Plastics that are marked #1 and do not use screw top lids (like the "clamshell" containers used for eggs, deli product and muffins) should go in with your regular garbage.

To continue to reduce the amount of plastic going to landfill, check the plastic content of a container before you buy it and avoid buying #1 plastics without screw tops.

GLASS BOTTLES AND JARS

Place clean glass bottles and jars loose inside the blue box. Do not bag glass.

Do not include broken glass, window panes, mirrors, lightbulbs, ceramics or drinking glasses.

PLASTIC/STYROFOAM CONTAINERS

Leave caps on plastic containers. Place clean plastic food and beverage containers loose in the blue box. Do not bag plastics or styrofoam.

We accept rigid plastic and foam plastic containers including pop bottles, juice bottles, shampoo bottles, Styrofoam, and plastic lids. #1 screw top only, #2, #4, #5 and #6 plastics can be recycled. Look for the number in the recycling triangle on the bottom of the container.

We do not accept #3 or #7. If a combination of numbers appear on the container including #3 or #7 please place the item in the garbage.

We do not accept popcorn styrofoam. Styrofoam protective packaging pieces must be no larger than 36" x 24" x 8".

ALUMINUM AND STEEL CANS

Place clean metal food and beverage cans loose inside the blue box. Do not bag metal cans.

Metal lids can be placed inside a can and pinched shut. Labels do not need to be removed.

NOT SURE IF AN ITEM IS RECYCLABLE?

The following list will help you decide which materials can be recycled and which should be placed in the garbage. Remember "Put Waste In Its Place". Putting garbage in with your recyclable material can result in your Blue Box being left behind.
