Recycling - Grey and Blue Boxes
The City of Kingston collects recyclable material in a two-box system that involves the use of separate Grey and Blue boxes on alternate weeks. Please place your blue box or grey box at the curb by 6 a.m. on your scheduled collection day.
By collecting recyclables in this manner, the City has reduced collection costs by 20 per cent — a net savings of $1.1 million from July 2006 to July 2012. The savings are due to the fact that collection truck drivers don't have to spend as much time sorting recyclables at the foot of each driveway resulting in more stops per day and increased efficiency.
Grey boxes are for paper products and plastic bags. Newspapers, milk cartons, cereal boxes and tetra-paks go in grey boxes, either flattened and bundled or in untied plastic grocery bags. Stuff extra bags together and tie shut. Flatten and bundle your cardboard. Learn more about grey box sorting.
Blue boxes are for the rest of your recyclables including metal food and beverage cans, rigid and foam plastic containers (#1 with screw tops, 2, 4, 5 & 6) as well as glass bottles and jars. Plastic bags are not permitted in the blue box. Learn more about blue box sorting.
Blue and grey boxes are available for new residents of houses and apartments (with fewer than 25 units and not served by wheeled carts) at the Kingston Area Recycling Centre (KARC) and City Hall. Lost and broken boxes with be replaced free of charge. Broken boxes may be brought to KARC for recycling. Extra boxes are available for $6 each.
BLUE BAGS
"Blue Bags" are the perfect tote for apartment dwellers to take their recyclable materials to a central area. Blue Bags are available at KARC for $3.00 each.
YOU MUST USE A BLUE/GREY BOX
Collection vehicles cannot pick up material that is not in a standard-issue Blue or Grey box. These boxes are designed specifically to fit on collection vehicles, making it faster and easier to empty material, resulting in higher efficiency and lower costs.
