null City approves city-wide bike-share program.

May 2, 2018 -

Please note that the Dropbike not run in 2018.

Last night Kingston city council approved a city-wide bike-share program with Dropbike Inc., following the successfully pilot program that ran in the central part of the city last year. Look for the orange Dropbike bikes around Kingston starting July 1.

"The bike-share pilot program was very successful in 2017, with more than 6,000 rides taken, proving Kingston's interest in using more active transportation options," says Mayor Bryan Paterson. "We are pleased to partner with Dropbike Inc. again to deliver an expanded bike-share program in 2018 that will see more bikes at more locations across the city."

The city-wide bike-share program will:

  • expand on last year's pilot program by offering more bikes at more locations
  • include installed docks at pick-up/drop-off areas to improve bike storage and organization
  • provide improved bikes that include three-speeds and supplemental cable locks
  • cost just $1 per hour for use of a Dropbike

Bike-share systems allow residents and visitors to pick up a bike from a designated area and ride to another designated area for a small fee. The pilot program was launched on Canada Day weekend and ran until the end of November 2017 in the University District and downtown areas of the City. Council has authorized a three-year commitment to Dropbike to operate a full-scale bike sharing system starting in the summer of 2018.
