null City gathers "smart" street-level data to help manage planning and maintenance

August 27, 2018 -

The City has contracted Brockwell IT to capture high-definition, three-dimensional geographic images of infrastructure and facilities on the streets of Kingston.

Captured using a specially-equipped vehicle, these images will be used to compile a library of highly accurate data to help map, design, build and maintain a smart, livable, 21st century city.

"Over the next month this vehicle will be collecting digital images that can offer precise and accurate information on our transportation and utility infrastructure, facilities and trees along with public safety data," says Jeff Bumstead, chief information officer, who notes that this aligns with the City's Smart Kingston strategy. The City will use the information – which includes clearances, elevations, surface areas and other specifics – to manage maintenance and planning requirements.

"This is a powerful tool that offers results that will be used by all City departments. It gives us an extraordinarily useful inventory of all City assets in a spatial context," says Bumstead.

Brockwell IT will complete this $170,000 street-level survey of Kingston over the next month.

Residents may notice the white unmarked Ford Escape with rack-mounted cameras moving slowly to collect this data. Faces and licence plates will be blurred on the collected images to protect resident privacy.
