City seeks input as it considers options to manage short-term accommodations

March 5, 2018 -

The City is seeking resident, host and hospitality sector input as it considers whether to implement measures to manage short-term accommodations (vacation rentals).

"A recent review of Airbnb showed there were 550 listings and 390 active Kingston hosts offering rooms in their residences to visitors. This is an emerging use of residential land, and we would like to hear if or how people would like to see it regulated by the City," says Jason Budd, senior planner.

Residents, those who offer short-term accommodations in their homes and those who work in the wider accommodation sector are encouraged to complete a survey at GetInvolved.CityofKingston.ca by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, March 26.

Introductory community discussion session: March 15

The City will also be holding an introductory discussion session on this issue from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 15 at Memorial Hall, City Hall, 216 Ontario St.  A presentation on short-term accommodations will be followed by informal discussions with planners and community members to gather feedback.

Both the survey and discussion session will seek feedback on the effects of short-term accommodations on:

  • the housing supply
  • housing affordability/income potential  for hosts
  • neighbourhood character
  • noise
  • parking
  • congestion
  • fairness (when compared to safety and other rules governing hotels/motels/traditional B&Bs)
  • using a residential property for commercial purposes
