City seeks to recognize Remarkable Recyclers

March 17, 2014 -

The City is again seeking to recognize and reward its most Remarkable Recyclers.  If your household knows what to do with a plastic shopping bag or a cardboard can with metal ends* once you are done with them, there's a good chance YOU are Remarkable Recyclers.

"Becoming a Remarkable Recycler household is a great way to engage the whole family in learning about recycling and waste diversion," says Derek Ochej, Public Education Coordinator. He notes that Green Bins and Blue and Grey Boxes are aimed at helping Kingston reach its goal of diverting residential waste from landfill.

Register to participate by emailing remarkable@cityofkingston.ca or by calling the City's Customer Service Centre at 613-546-0000 by March 28.

Participants will have their collectibles audited for sorting accuracy the collection week of March 31 to April 4. If your waste is correctly sorted and you've set out just one bag of garbage or less, your household will get "Remarkable Recycler" Blue and Grey Boxes, and your name will be entered in a random draw for a Kobo e-reader.  Participants must live in a residential home in the city of Kingston with curbside recycling and garbage pick-up to be eligible.

Signs you may be a Remarkable Recycler*

  • You know that clean plastic bags go in your Grey Box.
  • You know that cardboard cans with metal ends (like coffee cans) can go in the Blue Box.
  • You put paper towel in the Green Bin once you've used it to sop up a mess.
  • You toss Tetra-Pak juice boxes in the Grey Box.
