City shows its support for LGBTQ+ community
May 29, 2018 -
The pedestrian courtesy crosswalk in front of Kingston City Hall will have a new vibrant look Wednesday morning: the signature Pride colours were painted in support of the LGBTQ+ community. The new look marks the beginning of Pride month that gets underway on June 1.
"It's great to see the signature crosswalk in front of City Hall being painted in support of the Pride celebrations happening this year," says Mayor Bryan Paterson. "I'll be asking Council to join me in proclaiming June as Pride Month in Kingston at our next meeting as we show support for our LGBTQ+ community and demonstrate that everyone is welcome and valued here in our city."
The crosswalk will be painted between midnight and 3 a.m. on May 29. The paint is non-slip and environmentally-friendly and has been applied on a temporary basis (the lines will be repainted at the end of June).
Council will be asked to proclaim June as Pride Month in the City of Kingston on June 12. With Council's approval, the Pride flag will fly at Confederation Park on June 16 and City Hall will be illuminated with rainbow colours that same night as approved last year as part of City of Kingston's Illumination Policy. The Pride Parade and Community Fair also take place June 16 in McBurney Park.
