null City to host Secondary Suite Information Session
August 27, 2013 -
Are you interested in constructing a secondary suite in your home?
"We want more homeowners in key areas of the City to build secondary suites to add to the supply of affordable housing in Kingston. In addition to assisting homeowners with mortgage payments, secondary suites, such as basement apartments or in-law suites, provide affordable housing that meets the needs of various households including seniors, live-in caregivers, single parents and other smaller households," says Sheldon Laidman, Director of Housing. Developing affordable housing is one of the City's top six priorities outlined in its Corporate Strategic Plan.
Interested homeowners are invited to a Secondary Suite Information Session at the Isabel Turner Library Branch (off Gardiners Road behind the Cataraqui Centre) on Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The City's Housing, Building, and Planning & Development Departments will discuss the process and the technical aspects of creating a legal secondary suite in Kingston. A representative from event partner, the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation, will also discuss how to create a ‘green' suite by incorporating energy-efficient designs and technologies.
This past February, City Council passed Official Plan and Zoning By-law amendments permitting secondary suites in certain areas of the City without the need for special municipal approvals.
The City has a variety of online resources to assist homeowners interested in creating a secondary suite at www.CityofKingston.ca/housing
