null Deadline looms for Communities in Bloom entries
June 6, 2013 -
Kingston's finest gardeners have until June 14 to register their gardens for the Communities in Bloom gardening competition. Registration forms are available for download at www.kingstonblooms.com or can be requested from Sue Hitchcock, Communities in Bloom Coordinator at 613-546-4291, ext. 1716.
Hitchcock's team of judges will be out July 3 to 10 evaluating front gardens and awarding points based on their "WOW" factor (the visual impact of the garden), design, maintenance and environmental awareness. Gardens can be awarded up to five blooms based on their point scores. Winners will be announced in August based on these categories:
- Residential: Small Gardens (20 ft of frontage or less); Medium Gardens (21 to 50 ft of frontage); Large Gardens (more than 50 ft of frontage); Multi-Family Garden (apartment, condo, townhouses); and Senior's Gardens (planted and cared for by gardeners 65 or older).
- Non Residential: Commercial Gardens (office buildings, gold courses, hotels, churches, retail, etc.); and Community Gardens (planted and cared for by a community group, including residential care facilities and co-operative gardens); Religious Institution Garden (planted and maintained by the church members). There is also an Education Institution Gardens (planted and cared for by students and volunteers) category.
- NEW this year! Water Wise Garden Category, sponsored by Utilities Kingston. Gardens will now also be judged on how water efficient they are.
Now entering its tenth year in our community, Kingston Blooms continues to help beautify our city, one garden at a time.
