East-end homeowners: attend an information session about developing a secondary suite
May 31, 2016 -
Homeowners in Kingston's east-end interested in building a secondary suite in their homes are invited to attend a public information session on Tuesday, June 14 at Fire Station Number 3, 211 Gore Rd. at 6:30 p.m. to learn about the process and general requirements for construction.
"Installing a secondary suite is an option that can help support the needs of homeowners as well as their tenants by providing additional affordable housing options," says Sheldon Laidman, director, housing and social services. "It is great to see Council's continued support for expanding the areas where secondary suites are permitted."
In November 2015, city council approved Zoning Bylaw amendments which expanded the areas where secondary suites are permitted within the city. Secondary suites can now be built in certain locations east of the Cataraqui River when constructed in accordance with applicable Zoning Bylaw provisions and Building Code requirements. The expansion of the secondary suites program supports the City's affordable housing initiatives outlined in the 10-Year Housing and Homelessness Plan and is consistent with policy and regulatory directions established under the province's Long Term Affordable Housing Strategy.
In addition to attending the session, homeowners are invited to review the secondary suites information webpage to learn more about the zoning and Building Code requirements and funding assistance: /residents/community-services/housing/programs/secondary-suites
