null Free Rideau Heights’ Arts-on-the-Rise programming kicks-off July 3

June 30, 2015 –

As part its plans to revitalize Rideau Heights, the City of Kingston is introducing a number of free new arts programs in the neighbourhood with a kick-off event in Headway Park on Friday, July 3 from 3 p.m. to  8 p.m. Everyone is welcome to take in the youth painters, hip-hop dancing, live DJs, pop vocal dancing and ukulele test drives. There will be food, face-painting and bouncy castles offered in conjunction with Kingston Frontenac Housing Corporation.

"The introduction of these free cultural programs has sparked the imagination of the community, fostered new partnerships and aims to engage residents, especially youth, in music, dance, theatre and visual arts. Arts on the Rise is an important and exciting addition to the City's Rideau Heights Rejuvenation Strategy and enhancing the quality of life we all enjoy," says Mayor Bryan Paterson.

The Arts on the Rise program is designed to engage residents and community partners in Rideau Heights through programming in the visual arts, theatre, music and dance. Working closely with Kingston Community Health Centres, Better Beginnings for Children, Pathways to Education, the Kingston & Frontenac Housing Corporation and the Limestone District School Board, the City of Kingston has sought authentic community voices to contribute to the programs' development.

Partnerships with the Kingston School of Dance, the Kingston School of Music, 101.9 CFRC, and numerous creators from the teaching artists' roster ensure that program offerings are of a professional calibre, are drop-in based and free of charge.

"The Kingston School of Dance in association with the City of Kingston is proud to share the joy of dance as a way to build bridges throughout our communities," says Ebon Gage, artistic director of the Kingston School of Dance. "We believe that dance should be accessible to all and that the arts foster understanding, appreciation and partnership. We are looking forward to getting to know all the members of our community, and for them to get to know us."
