null Grade 7's Collect 95 Skates For P.R.O. Kids

January 14, 2013

Grade 7 students Erin Dowling and Kassandra Fraser have collected 95 pairs of skates for the Great Skate Donate program.

The Great Skate Donate is a program of the City-run P.R.O. Kids charity, which helps Kingston youth from low income households participate in community recreational opportunities. The annual Great Skate Donate collects gently-used skates and pairs them with those who need them.

Erin and Kassandra, Grade 7 students at Odessa Public School, contacted P.R.O. Kids in November to discuss running a skate drive as a school project. Collection bins were set up at W.J. Henderson Arena, Ernestown Secondary School, Corus Entertainment and Moscow United Church. The drive was extremely successful and Kassandra and Erin dropped off 95 pairs of skates to the Great Skate Donate on January 11.

"The donation comes at a key time in our collection season when our stock is low. We have already handed out 150 pairs of skates and we can't keep up with the demand. I'm happy to report that the skates Erin and Kassandra collected are already in distribution to those in need." Denita Dyck, Assistant Supervisor, Recreation Programs commented.

Need Skates? Drop in at the Wally Elmer Youth Centre during building hours and get fitted for a free pair of skates.

Got Skates? Skates are being collected until January 31 at the following locations:

  • Any Canadian Tire store in Kingston
  • INVISTA Centre, 1350 Gardiners Road
  • Beechgrove Complex Recreation Centre, 51 Heakes Lane
  • Wally Elmer Youth Centre, 50 MacCauley Street
