KEAF surveys residents' environmental priorities

April 22, 2014 -

To mark Earth Day, the City of Kingston is announcing the top results from its recent Environmental Priorities Survey conducted on behalf of Kingston's Environmental Advisory Forum (KEAF).  The full results, to be presented at KEAF's April 28th meeting, will help guide KEAF, the committee that assists the City in preparing its environmental strategy.

"As Earth Day highlights, we have a number of environmental concerns that are in need of addressing.  We were happy to have so many Kingstonians take the time to let us know which issues they view as priority items both globally and locally," says Viviane Paquin, the Chair of KEAF.

Here are the top environmental priorities based on the 182 survey responses:

Top global priorities

  1. Climate change and climate impacts of energy use
  2. Pollution of oceans, freshwater, groundwater and drinking water sources
  3. Preservation and protection of green space and habitat

Top local priorities

  1. Destruction of local wildlife habitat and connected habitat corridors
  2. Need for infrastructure to promote active transportation (trails, lanes, transit, etc.)
  3. Lack of environmental awareness knowledge of the LOCAL implications of our lifestyles* / Loss of urban greenspace and forests*

*These concerns received the same number of "Top Priority" survey votes.
