Kick-off Emergency Preparedness Week on Saturday with a family-fun event at Kingston Fire & Rescue Headquarters!
April 30, 2019 -
Emergency Preparedness Week begins this Saturday, May 4 with a community event and barbecue, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Kingston Fire & Rescue Headquarters (KFR), 500 O'Connor Dr. – and continues with a contest that asks what you are doing to prepare for potential emergencies.
On May 4, bring the family to learn about emergency preparedness in a fun, friendly way through hands-on activities. A free barbecue will be held for the public to enjoy, with donations to the United Way KFL&A being accepted.
Kingston Fire & Rescue Headquarters is one of the City's Emergency Operation Centres (EOC) – a place where City officials meet to coordinate responses to an emergency, such as an ice storm or major fire.
"Emergency Preparedness Week is an excellent way to get residents to think about the steps they can take to prepare for an emergency situation. It invites everyone to take ownership of their safety by taking simple steps, like preparing a home emergency kit. The week also highlights some of the ways the City is ready to act in the event of an emergency," says Brandi Timpson, the City's manager of emergency preparedness.
Following this kick-off event, residents will see emergency preparedness messaging around the City and on social media, throughout the month of May.
"When an emergency hits, our lines of communication could become severed. In those instances, it's key that our residents know how to act," says Timpson. "We hope everyone will embrace this week by taking action," she adds.

To encourage such action, the City's office of emergency management is hosting an online contest, which kicks off May 4, inviting all residents to show what steps they are taking to be prepared for an emergency for a chance to win a $100 Visa gift card.
"We're calling it #PrepareYourSelfieYGK and invite people to participate on Facebook and Twitter." Anyone who uses the designated hashtag and also tags Kingston Fire & Rescue in their post will have their name entered into a draw.
